Globally and in Türkiye, birth rates are falling simultaneously and at an unprecedented rate. Economic difficulties, high inflation, and housing prices are often cited as the sole culprits for this demographic crisis. However, macroeconomic data and sociological research prove that the root of the problem lies in a much more structural and digital upheaval. In this video, we challenge conventional thinking and examine how the institution of marriage and the intention to start a family are eroding, based on academic findings. We discuss how the socialization habits of young people have collapsed since the introduction of smartphones in 2007, the data on the loneliness pandemic, and how social media is undermining social trust through "digital echo chambers." We also analyze, using a data-driven approach, what this demographic collapse means for investors and individuals, and how the shrinking working-age population and rapidly increasing elderly dependency ratio threaten future retirement ages (projections of 74-75 years) and global economic growth.
