Road trip from Bakar to Karlovac along the historic Karolina (Carolina) road. Karolina road is one of four famous historic roads (Lujzijana, Karolina, Jozefina, Rudolfina) which cross mountainous regions of Croatia (Gorski Kotar and Lika) and connect continental and coastal parts of Croatia. Karolina was the first one of these roads and presented quite a challenge to build (especially in those days) since continental and coastal parts of Croatia are separated by a wild and mountainous region where young Alps meet ancient Dinara range. It was completed in 1728 and named after the Habsburg Emperor Charles III. Its purpose was to connect Karlovac (an important traffic intersection and a military outpost) with the port of Bakar (an important Habsburg Monarchy military port). After the completions of the railroad system and a much larger mountainous road Lujzijana (Louisiana), the significance of Karolina begun to fade and today this beautiful road is famous as a motorbike and bicycle enthusiasts' summer destination route. It is a really wonderful and leisurely alternative to the parallel modern highway (Zagreb to Rijeka) as well as a great way to see beautiful mountainous region of Croatia - Gorski Kotar.
