He Turned Down $28 Million For Two Million Records. Nobody Wanted Them.
Two million records. A company once offered him $28 million for them, which he turned down. When he finally tried to sell them years later, he couldn't give them away. What People Keep is a documentary series about the hidden worlds behind ordinary objects, the collectors, the history, the rivalries, and the obsessions. Each episode goes inside a different community, exploring why some things are worth keeping. In this documentary, we go inside the hidden world of vinyl record collecting. We follow Paul Mawhinney, the Pittsburgh man who built a two million record archive that he believed held the last surviving copies of 83% of its music, and who was offered $28.5 million for it before the deal fell through. We follow the collection to Brazil, where bus company owner Zero Freitas grew it past eight million records, paying university interns just to catalogue them. We follow Jack White into the Detroit pressing plant he built from scratch after he realized the machines that make records had stopped being manufactured decades ago. And we end with the record one man spent his life trying to bury, a single that became the most expensive 7-inch ever sold for over £25,000, precisely because he tried to make it disappear. ❓ What collector world should we explore next? Tell us in the comments. Mentioned in this episode: @OfficialTMR Sean Dunne's "The Archive" WHAT PEOPLE KEEP discovers worlds like this one. A different object. A different community. A different story hiding in plain sight. Because some things are worth keeping.
