Ethos in Rhetoric Triad (Part-1) THESIS God’s appointed, gifted pastor, who is equipped with sound doctrine, is an ethical person, and who works diligently is a credible preacher; therefore, he is worthy of double honors. APPLICATION 1. A pastor must strive to be worthy of honors. A. Winning souls—Matt. 16:18 (heavenly key given to Peter) B. Building up the body of Christ by sound teaching (Ephe 4:11-16) C. Ethical integrity 2. Congregation must honor their pastor as he is worthy. A. Support B. Obey his biblical leadership C. Appreciation of his overall works God’s call for the pastoral office and the missionary 1. Inward Desire and Conviction • 1 Timothy 3:1: "If anyone aspires to the office of overseer, he desires a noble task". • Jeremiah 20:9: "His word was in my heart like a burning fire shut up in my bones... I could not hold it back". • 1 Peter 5:2: "Shepherd the flock... not under compulsion, but willingly” 2. Outward Confirmation and Fruit • Acts 13:2-3: the Holy Spirit said, "Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them". • Acts 20:28, the "Holy Spirit has made you overseers" to care for the church of God. • 1 Timothy 4:14: Paul refers to the gift Timothy received when the council of elders laid their hands on him, [Ordination] • Ordination • Apostolic successor—Bishop and sacrament • Theological Degree—ordinary degree—(PRIDE) 3. Spiritual Gifting and Ability • Able to teach (1 Tim. 3:2, 2 Tim. 2:24) • Ephe 4:11-12: Gifts—apostles, prophets, evangelists, Pastor, and teachers • Titus 1:9: be able to "give instruction in sound doctrine and also to rebuke those who contradict it". 4. Character and Moral Integrity · 1 Timothy 3:2-7: "above reproach," "sober-minded," and "self-controlled". • Titus 1:6-9: "hospitable," a "lover of good," and "upright".
