Rosemaling is the traditional painted decorative folk art from Norway that began in the 1600's. Because of Norway's mountainous terrain and hundreds of valleys, the people of Norway had many dialects, native costume, traditions, ext. Norway also had a wealth of artisan traditions to draw from dating from the Viking era. When decorative painting styles reached Norway in the 1600's, it went into all this different areas and created over 15 different styles of Rosemaling, hence making it one of the most interesting folk arts to learn about and to paint.
