This Climber is Already Dead, He just Doesn’t Know it Yet

August 10th, 2005. At 19,000 feet on the Rupal Face of Nanga Parbat in Pakistan, Tomaz Humar watches a Pakistani Army rescue helicopter approach his position. The Slovenian mountaineer hasn't eaten in six days. His radio is nearly dead. His toes are turning blue from frostbite. But in minutes, he'll be rescued from certain death and turned into a national hero. Slovenia will erupt in celebration. But what nobody realizes is that surviving this day might be the worst thing that could happen to him. This climber is already dead. He just doesn't know it yet.
