Barges: Girl Scout Song/Sea Chanty with Lyrics

A beautiful and sad sea chanty (lyrics, history, and notes on variations below) NOTES: *This is the way we learned to sing Barges; we traditionally skip every other verse from the original. If you want the full lyrics (the verses sound the same), you can find them here: http://singingmemories.com/2008/04/30... *We have a simple harmony on the chorus, which is totally optional. The final verse ("Barges, I am going now with you...") is the same tune as the chorus and what it sounds like without any harmony. LYRICS: (Chorus): Barges, I would like to go with you I would like to sail the ocean blue Barges, is there treasure in your hold Do you fight with pirates, brave and bold? Out of my window looking in the night, I can see those barges' flickering light. Starboard shines green and port is glowing red— I can see those barges dead ahead. Chorus Away from my window, on into the night, I will watch 'til they are out of sight. Carrying their cargo far across the sea— How I wish that someday they'd take me. Chorus final chorus: Barges, I am going now with you, I am going to sail the ocean blue. Barges, we have treasures in our hold, As we fight with pirates brave and bold. HISTORY: As far as we know it, the story behind this song is about a little boy (or perhaps a girl) who was dying in a hospital and could see the barges out his window. He longed to sail away with the barges and wrote a poem about it; the final chorus was added by a parent after he was gone.
