Discover the rich history of Bradford with our engaging educational video. Join us on a journey through time as we explore how Bradford has changed from a prehistoric settlement to a vibrant, multicultural city in West Yorkshire. We begin with the earliest evidence of human life in the area, from flint tools at Wheatlands Grove to Neolithic axe trading and Bronze Age burials at Ashbourne Gardens. Next, we uncover the story of the Brigantes tribe and how Roman roads and coins link Bradford to ancient global trade. As we move into medieval times, we trace Anglo-Saxon Bradford, where the “broad ford” gave the town its name. Discover the founding of St Peter’s—now Bradford Cathedral, and learn how Ilbert de Lacy and a Market Charter helped the village grow. By the 14th century, mills lined the streets and annual fairs made Bradford a local hub. Then, witness Bradford’s incredible industrial rise. From kersey cloth weaving during the plague to becoming known as Worstedopolis in the 1800s, the town was transformed by wool mills, canals, turnpikes, and the railway. Learn about reformers like Richard Oastler and innovators like Titus Salt, who built Saltaire in 1853. The 20th century brings war and remembrance. Follow the story of the Bradford Pals in WW1, and see how the Bradford War Memorial honours their legacy. In WW2, the city faced bombings, evacuations, and women’s munitions work, with 682 lives lost commemorated in the Book of Remembrance. Finally, we explore Bradford’s multicultural history, from Flemish weavers and Little Germany to the opening of the first mosque in 1958 and Grand Mosque in 2014. Celebrate figures like Mohammed Ajeeb, the UK's first Asian Lord Mayor, and landmarks like the Mughal Gardens in Lister Park. With engaging visuals and clear narration, this video is the perfect way to support learning about Bradford’s diverse and inspiring history.
