Born in 1644 to a family of low-ranking samurai in Iga province (modern-day Mie), he served the young heir of the Todo clan, Todo Yoshitada, bonding with him through the art of haikai poetry. When Yoshitada died young, Basho left the samurai's path and traveled to Edo. There he rose to prominence as a master of haikai, but turned away from a life chasing fame and retreated to a simple hut in Fukagawa. A disciple's gift of a banana plant (basho) planted in the hut's garden gave him the pen name he would carry into history. With verses like "An old pond, a frog leaps in, the sound of water," he forged a new style of haikai — the Shofu — that found eternity in the smallest fleeting moment. Beginning with his 1684 travel journal "Exposed in the Fields," he embarked on a life of wandering, and in 1689 set out on the journey chronicled in his masterwork "The Narrow Road to the Deep North," through Tohoku and Hokuriku. Along the way he left immortal verses at Matsushima and at the mountain temple where he wrote "Stillness — sinking into the rocks, the cry of cicadas." The wandering poet, who declared the road itself his home, fell ill on a journey to Osaka and died there in 1694 at the age of 51. His death poem: "Sick on my journey, my dreams wander the withered fields." The "haiku saint" who elevated the form into high art.
