How *Not* to Build a Plane - TSR2 vs F-111

Early in the Cold War , Britain and the United States tried to build seriously fast, seriously low flying supersonic strike aircraft. The result was a pair of very different but equally ambitious aviation programmes, that tested what was possible to breaking point: the BAC TSR-2 and the General Dynamics F-111 Aardvark. Both were designed go under, rather than over, Soviet SAM defences at over Mach 1, and deliver a nuclear payload onto a target as much as 1,000nm from home base. In theory, these aircraft would be revolutionary. In reality, not so much. 00:00:00 – Intro 00:01:35 – US vs UK Approach 00:03:44 – In the Beginning 00:05:27 – The SAM Threat 00:06:40 – Low Flying 00:09:42 – The Requirement for TSR2 / F-111 00:23:01 – The OR339 Entrants 00:25:22 – A Word on Technology 00:32:56 – The Bidding Process 00:36:35 – EE vs Vickers 00:38:51 – A Guide On How Not To Procure Things 00:42:03 – LordVPN 00:43:34 – The Designs Firm Up & Cancellation 01:00:30 – The F-111 Challenges 01:07:28 – The Citroen DS References p.129-169 Bartlett, C.J.
