Ten days in the Black Hills in a 32-foot Class C — here's everything we learned so you don't have to figure it out the hard way. We based out of Beaver Lake Campground, just outside Custer on US-16A — a small campground sitting right on a lake, within 30 minutes of nearly everything in the region. Our Coachmen Freelander had no issues with the sites. One catch: we pulled up to the dispersed sites on North Pole Road and every single one was taken. September in the Black Hills — apparently we weren't the only ones with that idea. They had exactly one spot left at Beaver Lake. We took it. If you're planning a September trip, especially around the Buffalo Roundup, book Beaver Lake well ahead or come with a solid backup plan. During our stay, we: 🚗 Drove Needles Highway (Highway 87) in the FJ Cruiser — do this in a tow vehicle, not the rig 🦬 Had an unplanned longhorn encounter somewhere along the Needles corridor 🥾 Hiked Sunday Gulch Trail 🥾 Hiked Cathedral Spires Trail 🏔️ Summited Black Elk Peak 🥾 Climbed Little Devils Tower 🏛️ Toured Wind Cave National Park 🏛️ Visited Mount Rushmore at dusk 🦬 Drove the Custer State Park Wildlife Loop at golden hour 🌊 Explored Spearfish Canyon 🍽️ Spent an evening in Deadwood 🦬 Attended the Custer State Park Buffalo Roundup The Black Hills are about 50 miles wide, which means you can set up camp in one place and reach nearly everything in a day. That density, combined with the quality of what's actually here, makes this one of the better-value RV destinations in the American West. Budget five to seven days minimum. Ten is better.
