The Minoan civilization is one of the oldest in Bronze Age Europe, and thanks to the strategic location of the island of Crete, it played a preponderant role both as a cultural hub and as a commercial hub, acting as a link between East and West. At the head of a dense network of routes connecting Egypt, the Levant, and Anatolia to mainland Greece, the Minoans were protagonists of what classical sources would call thalassocracy, with a power and authority echoed in the mythical figure of Minos.
