Since Indonesia's independence, the Hindu community in Lumajang has not been well-organized and unified. At the beginning of independence, Hindus who identified themselves as Tengger Buddhists were still struggling to find their identity. After 1965, they finally organized themselves and in 1973 joined the Parisadha Hindu Dharma Indonesia (PHDI). The Hindu community of Pakel Village traditionally has a traditional leader called a "DUKUN ADAT." However, a Hindu religious leader was only appointed in 2000, and it wasn't until 2005 that the village temple was established, a process filled with joy and sorrow.
