Star-crossed and Lost - Written by Paul Rose You came like summer thunder in a winter sky Wild hair like fire, red mouth like a promise I’d die You looked right through the armour, found the boy beneath the man And with one quiet word you opened up my hands I gave you every secret I had never told before You drank them like communion, left me kneeling on the floor You said “I see you burning” — then you taught me lessons I never wanted to learn With a smile like absolution and a touch that made me yearn You were my beautiful disaster You were lightning in a jar I was just a fool who loved you faster Than my heart knew how to fall apart I still carry pieces of your fire Even though they cut me when they glow I was never meant to be your saviour But God, I loved you more than you’ll ever know You spoke in tongues of kingdoms that had never seen the sun Said “lose yourself inside me, it’s the only way you’re won” And for a while I believed you, let the current take me down Till I was drowning sweetly in your velvet, sacred sound You willed and I desired, that was always how we danced Two comets in collision, never given half a chance You opened up my ribcage, laid my heart out in the rain Then disappeared like morning mist — so beautiful and strange You were my beautiful disaster You were lightning in a jar I was just a fool who loved you faster Than my heart knew how to fall apart I still carry pieces of your fire Even though they cut me when they glow I was never meant to be your saviour But God, I loved you more than you’ll ever know You sent me poetry mean to touch me, when the silence had grown loud Just to peel back the skin of my defences, after years behind the cloud I heard you in the music, felt you move inside the dark And for one aching moment… I forgot about the scars You were my beautiful disaster You were lightning in a jar I was just a fool who loved you faster Than my heart knew how to fall apart I still carry pieces of your fire Even though they cut me when they glow I was never meant to be your saviour And the final lesson here is to love someone enough to let them go I don’t need the broken feelings, I don’t need you to say you’ll stay I just needed to get back on the path to become the man I am today So I will thank you for the fire… I will even thank you for the pain… I’m still becoming, and so much stronger And I will never be the same And wherever you are in this big bad world tonight I hope the light you carry forward will forever burn as bright We may be star-crossed and lost, but we survived.
