This power loss can be caused by a number of factors, including absorption, scattering, and bending losses. The performance of optical communication systems may be hampered by the loss of optical power, which may result in signal deterioration and distortion. In optical fibres, a variety of losses can take place, including: When a portion of the light energy is absorbed by the fibre material, absorption loss occurs. When imperfections or defects in the fibre material scatter light, there is a loss of light energy known as scattering.
