What Happened When Your Bank... Just Disappeared (1800s edition)
ou trust your bank the way you trust gravity — completely, without thinking. That confidence is shockingly new, and the story of what American banking actually looked like before someone built the system you take for granted is stranger and darker than anything you learned in school. For most of the 1800s, there was no single American dollar. Your bank printed its own money. So did the railroad, the general store, and in some cases the church down the road. By the 1850s, according to historian Stephen Mihm, the money supply had become a confused flood of more than ten thousand different kinds of paper, each one worth a different amount depending on how far you carried it from home and whether the bank behind it still existed. Around a third of all bills in circulation were counterfeit. And some banks were deliberately built so deep in the wilderness that redeeming your notes meant a multi-day expedition through forest and swamp with no guarantee of anything waiting at the end. They were called wildcat banks. They were not badly run. They were engineered, from the start, to make sure you could never collect. In this video, we explore the full, stranger-than-fiction history of the Free Banking Era — the counterfeits, the panics, the wildcat schemes, and the chain of disasters that finally forced someone to build the financial safety net you rely on without a second thought. ⏱️ CHAPTERS 0:00 Number 1: What_Happened_When_Your_Bank_Just_Disappeared_1800s_edition If this changed the way you look at the money in your pocket, hit LIKE — it helps the algorithm put this in front of more people who need to hear it.
