Scratch Marks Found Inside Her Coffin Revealed a Horrifying Mistake

Rufina Cambaceres is one of the most famous figures in Argentine folklore and cemetery history. Born in Paris in 1883, she was the daughter of the Argentine writer and politician Eugenio Cambaceres and the Italian dancer Luisa Bacichi. Raised in wealth and privilege, Rufina received an excellent education, reportedly speaking several languages and moving within the upper circles of Buenos Aires society. What made Rufina famous, however, was not her life but the tragic and mysterious story surrounding her death. On her nineteenth birthday in 1902, she suddenly collapsed while preparing to attend the opera. Doctors examined her and declared her dead, possibly from a stroke or heart attack. She was buried the following day in the family mausoleum at La Recoleta Cemetery, one of the most prestigious cemeteries in Argentina. According to the widely repeated legend, strange noises were heard from her tomb shortly after the burial. When the mausoleum was opened, signs suggested that Rufina had regained consciousness inside her coffin. Reports described scratch marks on the coffin lid and injuries to her face and hands, leading many to believe that she had been mistakenly buried alive, possibly after entering a cataleptic state that had been mistaken for death. Whether every detail of this account is historically accurate remains debated, but the story became one of Argentina's most enduring urban legends. Today, Rufina's tomb is among the most visited monuments in La Recoleta Cemetery. The Art Nouveau mausoleum features a striking life-sized statue of Rufina appearing to push open a door, as if stepping out from her tomb.
