Srimad Bhagavad Gita 3.17 Translation: But for those who are situated in self-bliss and who are enlightened and satisfied within themselves, there are no fixed duties. Note: Only those who renounce external desires for material pleasures can remain blissful and self-absorbed. Worldly desires are the root cause of our bondage, 'This should happen, and this should not happen.' Sri Krishna further states in the 37th verse of this chapter that desires are the cause of all kinds of sins and must therefore be renounced. As already mentioned (in the 64th verse of the second chapter), always keep in mind that whenever Sri Krishna preaches the renunciation of desires, he means the renunciation of worldly desires, not the desire for spiritual progress or the desire to attain God. Nevertheless, it is important to consider first why worldly desires arise. When we consider ourselves to be the body, then we feel that the desires of the body and mind are the desires of the soul and these thoughts push us into the realm of Maya. Saint Tulsidas has expressed: When I get separated from Hari, then I consider the body and home to be my own. I have forgotten the true nature of Maya and due to that illusion I suffer immense pain. "When the soul turns away from God, the power of Maya casts a veil of illusion over it. Because of this illusion, we begin to identify ourselves with the body, and forgetting ourselves causes us to suffer immense pain." But wise men realize that the soul has no physical form and is divine, and therefore, immortal. The perishable objects of the world cannot satisfy the hunger for bliss of the immortal soul, and therefore, it is foolish to run after worldly pleasures. Thus, souls illuminated by the light of self-knowledge integrate their consciousness with God and experience the infinite bliss of God within themselves. The karma prescribed for souls engrossed in worldly pursuits does not apply to souls who have attained the state of perfection, because they have already achieved the goal of all such actions. For example, while a student is still an undergraduate, it is mandatory for them to follow the university's rules, but once they graduate and receive their degree, the university's rules become unnecessary. It has been said of great men: "Brahmavit Shruti Mudhirn" means "Those who have established their oneness with God walk on the Vedas." This means that they are never required to follow the rules of the Vedas. The purpose of the Vedas is to help the soul unite with God. Once a soul attains God-realization, the rules of the Vedas, which help the soul reach its destination, no longer apply to it. Such a soul falls outside their jurisdiction. For example, a priest ties a man and a woman in the marital union at a wedding ceremony. Once the ceremony is over, he says, "You are now husband and wife; I am leaving." His work is finished. If the wife later says, "Pandit ji, my husband is not following the vows you made during the wedding ceremony," the priest will reply, "This is beyond my jurisdiction. My job was to bring you both together in marriage, and that work has been done." Similarly, the Vedas protect the soul. They help unite one with the Supreme Being. Thus, upon attaining God, the purpose of the Vedas is complete. Such virtuous souls are then no longer obligated to perform Vedic duties. #bhagavadgita #geeta #hindi #spirituality #krishna #shorts
