Stop Sounding Like a Textbook: Natural English Connectors
If you're using "furthermore" at the start of every sentence, you're not impressing your examiner. You're annoying them. Connectors (also called linking words or cohesive devices) show relationships between ideas. They're worth 25% of your IELTS Writing mark. But using them badly costs you marks. Most students make the same mistakes. They overuse connectors, repeat the same ones, and get the punctuation wrong. "However," "therefore," and "moreover" are adverbs, not conjunctions. That means you cannot join two complete sentences with just a comma. Here's the fix: use a full stop or semicolon before these words, then a comma after. Want personalized feedback on your writing?
