Phish – Seven Below July 13, 2003 | The Gorge Amphitheatre – George, WA Step back into the high-desert heat of Summer 2003 for one of the most celebrated, psychedelic, and boundary-pushing jams of Phish’s "2.0" era: the legendary 22-minute "Seven Below" from the second night at The Gorge. 🎥 About the Concert & Summer Tour 2003 Following a two-year hiatus that wrapped up at the end of 2002, Phish returned in 2003 with a gritty, unrefined energy. This period—now famously known as the "2.0 era"—was defined by a massive shift in sonic textures. Gone was the crisp, clean precision of the late 90s; in its place was a darker, deeply atmospheric, and high-risk style of long-form improvisation. Trey Anastasio traded his compressed tones for a raw, distorted, and uncompressed growl, while the band routinely tore down song structures to hunt for deep, cosmic spaces. The weekend of July 12–13, 2003, marked Phish's return to the majestic Gorge Amphitheatre. The second night was already a wild affair—featuring Mike Gordon on electric bagpipes during "Halley's Comet" and "Guyute"—but it was Set 2 where the musical gravity completely shifted. ❄️ The Significance of this "Seven Below" Clocking in at just under 22 minutes, this specific rendition of "Seven Below" is widely considered a holy grail of post-hiatus Phish. While the song was still a relatively new addition to their catalog (debuted on the album Round Room), the band used it as a launching pad into the absolute unknown. The Sonic Shift: The jam begins rooted in the song's signature icy, melodic snow-globe groove, but quickly dissolves into a sprawling, Type II improvisational masterclass. The "Third Stone" Tease: Keep your ears open for a wicked, gritty tease of Jimi Hendrix’s "Third Stone from the Sun" from Trey, perfectly matching the vast, desert landscape surrounding the stage. The Deep Dark Space: As the jam evolves, the band leaves all structure behind, descending into an eerie, ambient, and beautifully sinister musical hallway. It is a stunning example of "hose"—where the band taps into a collective consciousness and pours out pure, unadulterated musical emotion. When the final notes faded, text messages and phone calls flew across the community. This wasn't just a great jam; it was proof to the fanbase that the danger, the thrill, and the deep-space exploration of Phish was fully back.
