You are invited to join, you are invited to share. 1. This week's parasha, Parasha Balak, is the seventh parasha in the book of Numbers. This is the parasha that is read in the Land of Israel. Outside the Land, two chapters are read on Shabbat: Hukat and Balak. 2. Parasha Balak describes King Balak, who seeks to curse the people of Israel and to that end turns to the prophet Balaam. Pay attention to the mechanism that characterizes our enemies to this day: he does not want to build and succeed and advance, he wants first and foremost to destroy others, to harm, to spoil the journey of the people of Israel. 3. Balaam joins the mission, but when he sees the people, only blessings come out of his mouth. These blessings have become famous verses. For example: "Behold, the people of Caleb shall arise, and as my king shall be exalted." Or: "How good are your tents, O Jacob, than your dwellings, O Israel." 4. Three times Balak takes Balaam to different places to curse, and again and again he fails to utter a bad word. He prophesies about the past, present, and future of the people, about the strength, blessing, peace, faith, and the eternal covenant between us and God. But at the end of the parsha, the sins of some of the people of Israel with the daughters of Midian are described, and a plague breaks out among the people. Blessings alone are not enough; self-improvement and correction are also needed. 5. Therefore, in the Haftarah that is read after the parasha, a beautiful and famous sentence by the prophet Micah appears: "Let a man tell you what is good and what does the Lord require of you? If you do justice and love mercy and walk humbly with your God." Do you want to know what is good? What is required of you? Here: to do justice, to love mercy and to act with humility. The compliments of the wicked Balaam are completely different from the prophetic words of the prophet Micah, who truly wants to improve the situation of the people. Shabbat Shalom.
