Otto Frederick Warmbier, a 22-year-old American college student, was arrested in North Korea in January 2016 while visiting the country as part of a guided tour. Warmbier was accused of attempting to steal a propaganda poster from his hotel in Pyongyang, and in March 2016, he was sentenced to 15 years of hard labor after a brief trial. Following his conviction, Warmbier spent over a year in a North Korean prison under unclear conditions. In June 2017, he was released by North Korea in a comatose state and returned to the United States. Doctors discovered that he had suffered severe brain damage, though the exact cause of his injuries remains disputed. Otto Warmbier died six days after his return, on June 19, 2017.
