Skydiving in Hawaii, Gliders, Hang Gliding, Flight Training In Danger - Save Our Sky Documentary

*July 2024 Update* In 2020, USPA played a key role in saving Dillingham (Kawaihāpai) Airfield in Hawaii from closure with the help of USPA’s Airport Access Defense Fund and the efforts of member Ben Devine. Now, we’re excited to announce that Dillingham has secured a 50-year lease with the state of Hawaii and the U.S. Army, signed by Governor Josh Green! This lease guarantees the airfield's future, supporting local businesses and tourism while providing stability for the North Shore community of Oahu. Plans include infrastructure improvements and expanded use, ensuring it remains a vibrant aviation hub. Thank you to everyone who supported this effort. USPA remains dedicated to supporting all Group Member drop zones and ensuring safe flights for skydivers everywhere! More commonly known as Dillingham Airfield, it is the home of skydiving, glider operations, hang gliding tours, flight training, and the Civil Air Patrol. Show your support! How the United States Parachute Association is Helping At USPA, we’re here to ensure continued rightful access to this incredible sport we all love, while supporting safe skydiving and all those who enjoy it. In late February, USPA sent a video team to gather the stories from those who would lose everything with the closure of the airfield. Skydivers know that we who share the air are family and more than anything, that feeling and connection are going to be what saves that airfield. Hawaii’s Department of Transportation (HDOT) currently manages the airfield and leases the land from the military. In February 2020, HDOT gave notice that it would be terminating its lease with the military effective June 30, 2020. With the efforts of USPA and others, HDOT subsequently announced postponing the lease termination to June 30, 2021. If the airfield were to close, there would no longer be a place for skydiving and other air sports on the entire island of Oahu. This would be truly devastating to the many businesses and more than 130 people who work at Dillingham Airfield and call it home.
