About the speaker: Erika Taparan is a Clinical Nurse Specialist in the Bladder Bowel & Pelvic Health team at Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust. About the session: Erika presents a quality improvement project focused on Trial Without Catheter (TWOC), in which each referral was individually assessed to plan the most effective and appropriate approach for catheter removal. The project's primary aim was to reduce emergency events, adverse events and failed removals, improving outcomes for patients while easing pressure on services. A central focus of the work was its sustainability impact, considering the use of materials, the number of emergency attendances by patients to hospital, staff visits to patients' homes and rates of recatheterisation. By addressing these factors, the project sought to demonstrate how clinical quality improvement and environmental sustainability can be closely aligned. The results to date have been very positive, and the project continues, with findings expected to inform wider practice across similar services.
