Luxembourg Gare Centrale, officially known as Luxembourg railway station, is the principal rail hub serving Luxembourg City. Located approximately 2 kilometres south of the historic city centre in the Gare district, it is the main arrival and departure point for domestic and international train services in Luxembourg. For visitors to Luxembourg City, Gare Centrale is a key transport gateway connecting the capital with neighbouring countries and regional destinations. The station first opened in 1859 and has undergone several expansions and modernisation projects. The current building reflects early 20th-century architecture, with a prominent façade facing Place de la Gare. In recent years, redevelopment works have improved passenger circulation, accessibility and platform capacity to accommodate growing commuter and international traffic. Luxembourg Gare Centrale is operated by CFL (Société Nationale des Chemins de Fer Luxembourgeois), the national railway company. The station has multiple through platforms serving both domestic and cross-border routes. Regular international services connect Luxembourg City with major cities such as Paris, Brussels, Trier and Metz. High-speed TGV services link Luxembourg directly to Paris, while frequent regional trains operate into Germany, Belgium and France, making the station an important cross-border commuting hub. For travellers arriving in Luxembourg City, the station provides straightforward onward connections. Public transport throughout Luxembourg is free in second class, including trains, trams and buses. The city’s modern tram line runs from Luxexpo in Kirchberg through the city centre and connects with the railway station area. Numerous bus routes depart from outside the station, linking passengers to districts such as Kirchberg, Limpertsberg and Bonnevoie. Inside Luxembourg Gare Centrale, passengers will find ticket offices, self-service machines, waiting areas and retail outlets. There are cafés, bakeries and small supermarkets within the concourse, offering food and essentials for travellers. Clear signage is provided in French, German and Luxembourgish, and English is widely understood by staff and information personnel. The station area, known as the Gare district, is a mixed residential and commercial neighbourhood. It contains hotels, restaurants and international food shops, reflecting Luxembourg City’s diverse population. While the historic old town lies uphill to the north, it can be reached by bus, tram or approximately a 20-minute walk. Accessibility has been improved with lifts, escalators and step-free access to platforms. The station also provides facilities for cyclists, including bike parking areas, as cycling is common in Luxembourg City. Overall, Luxembourg Gare Centrale functions as the country’s primary rail interchange, offering international connectivity, free public transport links and practical passenger facilities.
