Although no two clouds are exactly alike, if you think your painting looks off, check to make sure your cloud isn't too smooth or round. Perfect circle clouds are rare so try to elongate them, adding lumps and bumps to the edges. To paint clouds you want to use small circular motions while tapping your brush. The style of the cloud may change with the brush or tool you choose, but the technique will stay the same. Wet vs Dry backgrounds: When painting clouds you have decide if you want them to be bright or subtle. Subtle clouds are easier to paint on a wet background. Many artists suggest you start with a base layer for a cloud and then dry it so you can add brighter highlights. I do this often. Because acrylic craft paint dries very quickly, I also sometimes find it easier to paint the cloud on a dry background and if it gets too bright, add shading afterwards. Brush differences: ~The mop brush adds clouds quickly because of the large shape, but you don't have as much control. ~The Filbert brushes give you more control and are helpful to add the lumpy edges to clouds because of it's oval shape. ~I find the round brush to give you the most control and is easiest to create an irregular shape. ~For some fun try using cotton balls are small sponges. These create quick clouds with very little effort. If there are any tools you use for clouds that I didn't mention let me know in the comments! Let me know which cloud style you like best.
