Starting in Lake Placid—known as both the “Town of Murals” and the Caladium Capital of the World—we travel through communities across Polk, Hardee, and DeSoto counties including Frostproof, Dundee, Lake Hamilton, Lake Alfred, Eagle Lake, Mulberry, Fort Meade, Bowling Green, Wauchula, Zolfo Springs, and Arcadia. Along the way we look at railroad history, citrus and phosphate industries, unusual town name origins, and how these communities have grown and changed over time. From tiny towns of just over 1,500 people to historic county seats with beautifully preserved downtowns, this drive through small-town Florida highlights the unique character and history that can still be found along the state’s back roads.
