Deep in Siberia: Irkutsk

Large, secluded, cold. This is how most people would describe one of Russia's largest federal subjects. But does this description fit the place? Let's find out. Irkutsk Oblast is a federal subject of Russia (an oblast), located in southeastern Siberia. 2. Russian presence in the area dates from the 17th century: the Russian Tsardom expanded eastward following the conquest of the Khanate of Sibir in 1582. By the end of the 17th century, Irkutsk had become a small town, monasteries were being built, and suburbs and agricultural settlements had started to form. 3. With a total area of 277 km2, Irkutsk is then known as one of the biggest cities in Siberia and capital of the oblast. 4. Most of the population is made up of ethnic Russians. Russians and other Slavic/Germanic groups make up 93.5% of the population. One small ethnic group, concentrated in three villages (Pikhtinsk, Sredne-Pikhtinsk, and Dagnik) in Zalarinsky District is the so-called "Bug Hollanders": descendants of Polish-speaking Lutheran farmers who had moved to Siberia from the then Russian Volhynia in 1911–1912 in search of affordable land. Although they had long lost German (or Dutch) language of their ancestors (even in the early twentieth century they spoke Ukrainian and read Polish), they were still considered ethnic Germans, and during World War II were usually drafted for work in labor camps, instead of front-line military service. 5. The Circum-Baikal Railway (Russian: Кругобайка́льская желе́зная доро́га or Кругобайка́лка, abbreviated "КБЖД") is a historical railway in the Irkutsk region of Russia. 6. Irkutsk Aviation Plant is a company based in Irkutsk, Russia and established in 1932. Since its establishment in 1932, the plant has produced over 7,000 aircraft, including the Su-30 and Yak-130. 7. Irkutsk Oblast is the largest landlocked region in Russia. Also, the Irkutsk region is a large constituent entity of the Russian Federation, occupying an area of 774 846 km² (4.52% of the territory of Russia), which is slightly smaller than Turkey (780 580 km²), and also larger than the largest state completely located in Europe - Ukraine. Forests cover 71.5 million hectares and the forest fund of 69.4 million hectares is 715 and 694 thousand km², respectively.
