HORTELÃ-PIMENTA, MALVA DO REINO ou MALVARISCO (Plactranthus amboinicus) | Plantas Medicinais

Its scientific name is Plectranthus amboinicus and, depending on the region, it is called malvarisco, malvariço, malva-santa, hortelã-da-folha-grossa, hortelã-de-folha-grande, hortelã-gorda, hortelã-pimenta, hortelã-do-norte, among others. Peppermint, as it is more popularly called, has many benefits and is widely used by the population as a medicinal plant and also as a condiment. Its characteristics resemble boldo, as both belong to the same botanical family (Lamiaceae), so its very similar appearance can be confused with that of its relative Plectranthus barbatus (Garden Boldo), but when you touch it you can clearly see the difference between them. In Brazil, spearmint is used to treat ulcers caused by Leishmania (the parasite that causes leishmaniasis), skin diseases, topical use for boils and superficial mycosis, constipation, headaches, coughs, hoarseness, fever, and digestive problems. Especially in the North and Northeast of the country, it is used as a condiment for red meats due to its intense flavor and its ability to tenderize meat. It has a strong aroma and a slightly bitter taste, being mainly used to season meats, salads, sweets, kibbeh, feijoada (Brazilian black bean stew), savory pies, and pasta, and also in the preparation of teas. The benefits of consuming spearmint include: The plant is distributed throughout India, cultivated in gardens.
