Three P-51D Mustangs set out on a ground-attack mission in IL-2 Sturmovik: Great Battles, but after bombing an industrial target, the sortie turns into two separate dogfights. Flying on the Combat Box multiplayer server, our formation takes off carrying bombs and rockets for an attack against an enemy-controlled industrial sector. The journey to the target is quiet, but once we begin our attack runs, the objective comes alive with anti-aircraft fire. Then two enemy fighters arrive. When one of them attacks my wingman, I abandon the ground attack and move in to protect him. After the first fighter goes down, the second gets behind me and forces me into a hard defensive maneuver—with an unexpected ending. Believing the danger is over, we regroup and begin flying home. But on the return journey, we spot a friendly base under attack and dive back into another fight. This sortie features coordinated wingman tactics, authentic multiplayer communications, ground attacks, defensive flying and cinematic views of the P-51D Mustang in IL-2 Sturmovik: Great Battles.
