We have reached the seventh preaching of this Lenten retreat with Sister Maria Raquel, and today the Lord leads us to a decisive point of the first dwelling: discerning what is grace and what is nature. Not every “good” impulse comes from God—and it is precisely here, at the beginning of the interior life, that the still-vulnerable soul can become confused, mixing zeal with self-love, penance with vanity, courage with rashness. To move forward toward union with God, we must learn to recognize the voice of the Spirit and the voice of the tempter, who often hides under the appearance of good. In the light of The Imitation of Christ, you will receive a simple and powerful criterion for daily life: “What do I want with this?”—and the answer that purifies everything: the glory of God. Therefore, the work warns us: “Take care to discern the movements of nature and of grace.” (The Imitation of Christ) When the intention is pure, the soul does not lose peace in obedience, does not despair in the face of opposition, and can submit its own will to God’s will—a sure path to grow in interior freedom.
