The tragedy of Sousse – a city taken off the tourist map

On 26 June 2015 a lone gunman opened fire on Sousse beach, killing 38 holidaymakers. This was the deadliest terror attack in Tunisia’s modern history, and the biggest loss of British lives to terrorism since the 2005 attacks in London. It took this small North African nation 50 years to fortify its reputation as a “fly and flop” paradise, but just 50 minutes of terror for that sand castle to come crashing down. In the years that followed Tunisia tightened up its anti-terrorism measures across the country and foreign offices softened their warnings, prompting tourists to trickle back in.
