No Swim Today! Scottish River Too Dangerous After Heavy Rain

Join me, Katey Jane, on *The Wild Thing | Cold Water Scotland* for a cold water swimming day that did not go to plan. I came out to a Scottish river hoping for a swim, but after hours of heavy rain overnight, the river had completely changed. The water was high, fast, powerful and full of flow. Where I had been swimming before was now a proper no-go area. This is where cold water swimming is not about being brave, showing off, or pretending you can beat nature. You cannot beat water like this. Fast river flow after heavy rain is dangerous, and even a few inches of moving water can knock you over. Add hidden rocks, murky water, debris, boulders, strong current and narrow sections where the water speeds up, and you have a very bad day waiting to happen. So there was no swim today. Instead, I walked along the river looking for a safe slack area, explained what I look for before getting in, and showed why this river was too dangerous to swim. Sometimes the best cold water swimming decision is not to swim at all. You can always come back another day when the river has dropped and the flow is steady again. I also show some of the simple kit I use for cold water swimming in Scotland, including diving shoes, goggles, spare action camera batteries, warm layers and a fleece for warming up after getting out. Cold water swimming is fun, but you have to be prepared, especially when the weather changes quickly. This video is about real wild swimming in Scotland — not polished nonsense, not fake bravery, just honest cold water judgement, river safety, nature, experience and knowing when to walk away. Nature is boss. We are not.
