ChariTech: Building the Operating System for the Future of Medicine
ChariTech: Building the Operating System for the Future of Medicine Dr Wen Hwa Lee | Consilium Scientific Seminar Can a charity out-innovate biotech? In this Consilium Scientific seminar, Dr Wen Hwa Lee, CEO of Action Against AMD, explores ChariTech — a new model for mission-driven biomedical innovation that combines the agility of biotech and technology investment with the long-term public mission of a charity. Action Against AMD’s ChariTech model uses equity-held, for-profit subsidiaries working directly within the charity’s scientific field to attract private investment, accelerate technology development, and ensure that value flows back into charitable research and public benefit. Using the Foresight initiative in oculomics and AI-enabled early disease detection as a practical example, this seminar examines how ChariTech moves beyond the traditional divide between “non-profit” and “for-profit” systems. Instead, it proposes a more integrated model for ethical, sustainable, and translational medical innovation. This discussion is relevant for anyone interested in biomedical innovation, charity-led research, biotech investment, AI in healthcare, oculomics, early disease detection, translational medicine, public-private partnerships, drug discovery, impact investment, and the future of medical research funding. Dr Wen Hwa Lee is a molecular and structural biologist with an international background across drug discovery, academia, charities, industry, and government. Previously at the University of Oxford, he helped build major public-private partnerships for drug discovery, including the Structural Genomics Consortium and the European Lead Factory. His work focuses on connecting scientific, societal, and economic impact to accelerate meaningful healthcare innovation. Join Consilium Seminars for conversations on healthcare evidence, biomedical innovation, patient access, health policy, research ethics, and the future of medicine.
