It may seem strange to read the term "privateer ships" in connection with the German navy during World War II, but the Hilfskreuzer, merchant ships refitted as military vessels, carried a substantial supply of fine flags and equipment on board, allowing them to quickly change their appearance during cruises. Their tactics recalled those of the 18th-century privateers: approaching their prey without arousing suspicion and then plundering or torpedoing merchant ships (especially British ones). The Hilfskreuzer era ended in 1943, but it still lingers in the memory of a different style of warfare.
