Elvis Paul Tangem Presents The Great Green Wall I IN FOCUS: RADICAL REPAIR

“The Great Green Wall is a radical endeavor. It is business unusual,” said Elvis Paul Tangem, the project’s coordinator, during our In Focus: Radical Repair event last month. This vast pan-African initiative aims to build resilience to climate change in the continent’s dry lands, through a mosaic of sustainable land management, restoration and sustainable economic development projects. Speaking with The World Around executive director Beatrice Galilee, Tangem shared primary objectives of the programme and some progress updates since it launched in 2005—uniting the efforts of 35 countries bordering the Sahel. Smart agriculture, agroforestry, energy transitions, and other sustainable practices are all underway thanks to the GGWI. Tangem also highlighted the disparity between parts of the world with the highest carbon emissions, and those who will ultimately suffer its effects the greatest. “This is a clarion call… to understand that the challenges of climate change and the impacts of climate change cannot be ignored. Africa might be receiving the huge impact of climate change, but when you look at carbon emissions, Africa is below 4%. So 96% of the world is polluting and the 4% is feeling the impact.” This presentation was part of In Focus: Radical Repair the interview recording took place on September 27, 2023, and was screened at the first event organized in the framework of the global cultural partnership between The World Around and Fondation Cartier.
