Biographical Interview - AfroCuban Percussion Workbook
"I have been a student of Cuban music many years, traveling to the island to study at the source. My main teacher has been Jose Eladio Amat Medina, professor of percussion at the music academies in Havana. With my good friend Curtis Lanoue, Jose wrote this book to present the basic rhythms and charts of Afro Cuban percussion, folkloric, traditional, and modern. Jose is a bottomless well of knowledge and technique. Unlike many great Cuban musicians who left the island, he has chosen to endure the challenges of daily life there to stay close to family and roots, and to bring up new generations of musicians to keep the traditions alive. I made this video with Jose at his home studio in Havana during the first week of October, 2010 to demonstrate the rhythms presented in the book. The video chapters correspond to the order of the charts in the book, making it easy to find and follow each arrangement. Almost all the charts are included. In addition, we present some quinto variations for guaguanco, and demonstrate the modern street rumba, guarapachangueo, for two players and four drums. Finally, I include an interview with Jose in which he tells the story of his professional career, translated by my friend and guide Julio Cesar Garcia." -- Thor Anderson.
