LENA HORNE Jamaica '58
In 1957, the great Lena Horne headlined the Broadway hit "Jamaica," her presence keeping the show running for over 500 performances. "Jamaica" didn't have a lot of plot, but it did have a scintillating score (music Harold Arlen, lyrics E.Y. Harburg). Here is Horne, direct from the Imperial Theatre in 1958, in "Push de Button." (Horne reprised the song in her 1981 Broadway smash "Lena Horne: The Lady and Her Music.") This clip not only has a time code at the top but another code smack in the center of the picture. But it's the only clip I've ever come across featuring Horne in a number from "Jamaica" during its run, and I think it's electrifying. That's host Steve Allen holding up the cast album at the beginning of the clip.
