Crispian Mills of Kula Shaker on (briefly) being a member of X-Ray Spex
I heard an interesting radio interview a few years back that Crispian did with Stuart Maconie on his experience of playing alongside the late great Poly Styrene at a one-off reunion gig by X-Ray Spex at Brixton Academy in 1991. It intrigued me enough to try and track down a video of the aforementioned gig, which I eventually managed. Anyway with both interview and video to hand it seemed like it would be worthwhile to try combining the two. So here is my attempt at doing just that... NB the date of this gig was 14th September 1991 as best I can ascertain. There are some online sources out there that claim that Poly wasn't even part of the X-ray Spex line-up for that particular gig, but nonetheless I'm fairly sure that it was the one shown here. (Also, although Crispian's memory of events turns out to tie in closely with the actual footage - inc. the slightly bizarre unscheduled costume change - he is slightly wrong on one point, they didn't finish with "Germ-Free Adolescents"; it was earlier in the set list, which is why she's still wearing the helmet for that song.)
