For decades, the organization imposed rigid expectations regarding beards, women’s clothing, and higher education—standards that shaped how members judged one another. Now, these same attitudes are portrayed as personal failings, rather than the result of organizational guidance. I show how these constantly changing policies, often labeled as “new light,” reveal a deeper issue: the Governing Body’s refusal to acknowledge responsibility for past rules while advising others on humility and the importance of non-judgment.
