Heat Treating D2 Steel for the first time
Just a video I took of me heat treating D2 Steel for the first time. I need to work on my narration skills, I'm not used to explaining what I'm doing. A quick synopsis, this is for once you have the blades shaped how you want them and are ready to heat treat. First you stainless foil wrap the blade in an air tight envelope. This is to avoid scale forming on the steel. In my case I'm using an evenheat oven. Set the temperature to 1875°F and the askew the blades to soak for 15 minutes. After the soak time they are ready to be quenched. D2 is an air quench steel, so I'm using aluminum plates to quench. After cooling to room temperature, it is beneficial to do a cryo treatment as an extension of the quench. You can also do a snap temper between the quench and the cryo if you prefer. I left them in cryo for about 6 hours, then into the temper oven for two 2 hour cycles.
