OU's Coach Was Scouting Someone Else. Then This Small-Town Kid Went Yard: Cord Rager

Cord Rager is from Maypearl, Texas — a town of about 1,000 people, an hour and a half from the nearest scouts. He posted his own highlights on Twitter, played Five Tool tournaments to get noticed, and got discovered by OU when a coach was at a game scouting a completely different player. Recruited as a hitter, he chose the mound — and debuted with five innings and eight strikeouts against #10 TCU at Globe Life Field, fanning the side in his very first collegiate inning. In this episode of The 109, Cord discusses: -Small-Town Texas: Growing up in Maypearl (population ~1,000), driving 90 minutes to get in front of scouts, and coming out of his shell at college. -The Self-Marketing Hustle: Making a Twitter account, having his parents record games, posting highlights, and using Five Tool tournaments to get seen. -The Discovery Story: How OU's Coach Raley was scouting another player, Cord hit a homer and a double, and the coaches asked — "who's this kid?" -Two-Way Recruit, Chosen Pitcher: Recruited as a hitter but chose the mound because the left-handed pitching gift was too obvious to deny. -The TCU Debut: Five innings, eight strikeouts against #10 TCU at Globe Life Field — fanning the side in his first collegiate inning, back on the same mound where he worked out for the Rangers. -Tunnel Vision: Playing at LSU in front of 10,000 hostile fans and learning to lock in — the mental side of performing as a freshman in the SEC. #CollegeBaseball #OUBaseball #Sooners #BoomerSooner #SEC #The109 #GlobeLife #TCU #SmallTownBaseball
