Beginning as a monarchy, Rome transformed into a republic in 509 BC, governed by elected officials and the Senate. The republic expanded through military conquest and diplomatic alliances, gradually dominating the Italian peninsula and then the Mediterranean world. The transition to empire began during the political turmoil of the 1st century BC, marked by figures like Julius Caesar. His adopted heir Octavian, later known as Augustus, became the first Roman emperor in 27 BC, ushering in the Pax Romana - two centuries of relative peace and prosperity. At its height under Trajan (98-117 AD), the empire stretched from Britain to Egypt, from Spain to the Euphrates River. Roman civilization profoundly influenced language, law, architecture, engineering, and culture. They built vast networks of roads, aqueducts, and public buildings, many of which survive today. Latin, the Roman language, evolved into modern Romance languages like Italian, French, and Spanish. Roman law formed the basis of many modern legal systems, while Roman architecture inspired countless buildings across history. The empire began declining in the 3rd century AD, facing internal political instability, economic troubles, and external pressures from Germanic tribes. Emperor Diocletian's reforms temporarily stabilized the empire but also formally split it into Eastern and Western halves. The Western Roman Empire gradually weakened and finally fell in 476 AD when the last emperor, Romulus Augustulus, was deposed. The Eastern Roman Empire, known as the Byzantine Empire, continued until 1453 AD, when Constantinople fell to the Ottoman Turks. Roman influence persisted long after the empire's fall through its cultural, linguistic, and legal legacy. The idea of Rome as a universal empire influenced many later political entities, from Charlemagne's empire to the Russian czars, who claimed to be the heirs of Rome.
