"Japanese clocks" are clocks that divide day and night into six equal parts based on sunrise and sunset, and they have a mechanism that allows them to adjust the speed at which time progresses according to the length of daylight. ■Hanabusa President Kentaro Eto "The gears move as the weights descend. Bringing the weights to the outside slows down the swing. Because the days are longer in summer, the swing is lengthened to allow the weights to descend slowly. This allows for measuring summer time. Most importantly for me, it's the sound. This sound is exactly what someone somewhere in the Edo period heard. Here, you can experience the same thing as in Edo." ■Visitor "I never imagined I'd see something like this in Fukuoka. Clocks usually have rotating hands, but in this era, they didn't rotate, did they? They moved vertically. I think the concept of time was different too." The exhibition of Japanese clocks is held every few years to coincide with "Time Memorial Day," which commemorates the legend that Emperor Tenji used a water clock to measure time and inform people of the time approximately 1400 years ago. However, the date of the next exhibition has not yet been decided. ■President Eto: "We are currently working on a plan to redevelop Shintencho next year. The exact timing is still unclear, but in any case, after the redevelopment, the building will be rebuilt for a while, meaning there won't be a place to display the clocks." The Shintencho shopping street where Hanabusa is located is planned to be redeveloped as part of the "Tenjin Big Bang" project, a redevelopment initiative in central Fukuoka City, along with the adjacent Parco building. The store is scheduled to temporarily relocate next year. However, the relocation site has not yet been decided, and President Eto believes that if sufficient space cannot be secured, it will be difficult to display the Japanese clocks. In that case, the display of the Japanese clocks will have to wait until after the redevelopment of the Shintencho shopping street, so the timing is uncertain. ■President Eto: "I want people who hear this sound to say, 'Thank you for letting me hear this sound again,' when the redevelopment is complete. I want to create a town that truly warms the heart, a place where laughter can be heard everywhere. This is like a symbol of that."
