But birds don't always occupy the breeding sites in your own garden. Bird expert Christina Wohlfahrt from NABU Cologne explains what's important when hanging up nest boxes. AN ATTEMPTED BREEDING ATTEMPT? If the nest box contains only a somewhat fine, rather soft filling and nothing is visibly flattened, you can assume that the birds didn't breed. THE RIGHT MATERIAL IS KEY For the NABU expert, a nest box is ideal if it's made of wood and concrete – this provides excellent protection against heat and cold. The size of the box's opening determines which bird species will build its nest there. An entrance hole measuring 32 millimeters is suitable for great tits and blue tits. BIODIVERSITY IN THE GARDEN Good to know: The entrance hole of a birdhouse can be changed so that other bird species can nest in it next year. Starlings, for example, need an entrance hole of 45 millimeters. However, since birds tend to return to the same spot, the expert recommends putting up a second nesting box. WOODEN STARLING BOXES Depending on the material, birdhouses should be hung in a sheltered location, such as on a balcony or a covered wall. Bird nesting boxes can also be easily built yourself; there are many instructions available online. PROPERLY ALIGNING NESTING BOXES The orientation of the entrance hole is crucial when hanging a birdhouse. The right spot in the garden must be chosen. A stable location in a tree among the branches is ideal. There, the birdhouse can be secured so that it doesn't wobble. It's also important that there's a clear flight path and that no branches obstruct the entrance hole. An east- or south-east-facing orientation is also crucial. Additionally, the box should be hung at a height of about two meters to make it more secure from cats. THE RIGHT BREEDING SITE Birds build their own nests. With tits, the males search for a suitable location, and the females decide which nesting site is best. Once they've found one, they begin with dry moss, on which the female sits. This is how the bird's nest gradually takes shape.
