Make a Wooden Mallet: Making Three Wooden Joiner Mallets

Today we look at how to make a wooden mallet. Also knows as a joiner’s mallet, this is one of the essential hand tools for hand tool woodworking in the woodworking workshop for furniture makers, carvers, and may do it yourself protects. (DIY projects). A wooden mallet build is a great beginning woodworking project, as can be uses as a chisel mallet, carving mallet, assisting in glue ups and so much more. Whether you are a beginner woodworker or an experienced craftsman, in a garage workshop, or a large workshop, doing professional woodworking or just a do-it-yourself person, having a wooden mallet is an essential woodworking tool. Today we are making three mallets of three different sizes based on a mallet I made 30 years ago while I was at Genoa furniture making and design school. The medium mallet is based on the size that I made back then. It was the first project we made in school and was made entirely with our newly purchased hand tools (with the exception of a band saw). The original mallet has a 14” handle. I made the smaller mallet’s handle 3” shorter and changed all of its proportions accordingly, and I made the larger mallet’s handle 3 inches longer and likewise proportioned all of its dimensions accordingly. The smallest mallet can easily double as a carving mallet and the largest is capable or handling a larger shop project. These are not dead blow mallets but can cover a lot of the same territory.
