Webinar - The Ongoing Saga of Gender and Global Climate Governance

Recorded 23 March 2023 Speaker: Prof Karen Morrow Professor of Environmental Law, Law at Swansea University Abstracts: This paper considers gender equality issues arising in and around the context of global climate governance in the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), its Conference of Parties (CoP) and its regime machinery, notably the UNFCCC constituted bodies and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and in wider United Nations Contexts, notably the Commission on the Status of Women and in the UNFCCC’s civil society ecosystem. Gender equality issues have for some time now been widely recognised within global climate change governance and play an ongoing role in the international arena. Much has been done within the UNFCCC itself to improve its record and practices on gender in its work, though a great deal remains to be done. The greatest challenges in this area however concern leveraging substantial, substantive, action by states to address gender inequality in climate governance in their actions in the global climate governance regime.
