Tetsumai - Uproar 2025

On Saturday, April 19th, Gendo Taiko performed Tetsumai in our annual 2025 Spring Show, Uproar. Translated as “iron dance” in Japanese, Tetsumai juxtaposes a sequence of fluid movements against the rigid grain of a five-beat meter (5/4 time signature), while maintaining a balance of three distinct voices. The author, Gendo alumni Larry Hong ’10, took inspiration from Radiohead’s “15 Step” and Zack Hemsey’s “Mind Heist” from the soundtrack of Inception, drafting the song on Excel with respect to its gridlike composition. Choreographed by Gendo almuni Larry Hong, Ling Liu, and Mana Hayashi Tang ’11. Song Leader: Fiona McGill (RISD '26) Performing members: Rei Guo (Brown '25), Emily Tom (Brown '25), Fiona McGill (RISD '26), Ray Mandel-Mueller (Brown '26), Taka Montez de Oca (Brown '27), Ash Lassonde (Brown '27), Andrew Mao (Brown '27) RISD Auditorium, Rhode Island School of Design Instagram: @gendotaiko Facebook: gendotaiko Website: https://gendotaiko.com/
