But they both decided to move to America to start a new life when Mila was seven. That journey was long and difficult, as the family had only $250 when they arrived in Los Angeles in 1991. The Kunis family had middle-class jobs in Ukraine, and they struggled to adjust to their new home, with Mark taking odd jobs and Elvira working in a pharmacy. Mila also had trouble adapting to American culture. She told the Los Angeles Times in 2008, “I completely blocked out second grade. I have no memories of it. I always talk to my mom and grandma about it. It was because I cried every day. I didn’t understand the culture. I didn’t understand the people. I didn’t understand the language.” After adjusting to life in America, Kunis became an outgoing child, and at age 9, she asked her parents to let her take acting classes. She met the woman who would become her manager in the very first class. She then did commercials for major brands, such as Barbie and Lisa Frank, which she described in a 2018 video for Marie Claire: “All I had to say was ‘Wow.’ That was literally all I did for the first two years of my career.” Kunis’s parents supported her in building her career, as long as she stayed in school and got good grades. She had to work diligently because she quickly began to climb the ladder and secure a stable job. She told Interview Magazine in 2012, “From 9 to 14, I probably did 20 commercials. The first movie I did was Piranha […] Then I was in Make-A-Wish, Molly, where I played a Mexican girl who was racist toward a Russian Jewish girl, but I didn’t get the part of the Russian Jewish girl because they didn’t think I looked Russian or Jewish enough—and, mind you, I am Russian and Jewish—so they gave me the racist Mexican girl.
