The early morning coffee, the open highway and that feeling of not knowing what incredible discoveries lie around the next corner. Join us as we set off on a five-day adventure through the spectacular Pacific Northwest, from British Columbia to the historic coastal town of Astoria, Oregon. Today we’re leaving British Columbia behind and beginning an unforgettable 1,400-kilometre journey through Washington and Oregon. Over the next five days we’ll discover rugged coastlines, vibrant cities, volcanic landscapes and hidden gems before returning home through Washington State. Our first destination is historic Astoria, Oregon. From the Sumas Border crossing we head south on Interstate 5, making our first stop in Fairhaven, just outside Bellingham. This charming historic waterfront district is filled with brick buildings, local cafés and independent shops. Breakfast at Otherside Bagel was the perfect way to begin the adventure. Continuing south, we pass scenic Chuckanut Drive, one of Washington’s most beautiful coastal highways, famous for dramatic cliffs overlooking the Salish Sea. Nearby, tranquil Lake Samish sparkles beneath forested hills before we enter Skagit County, home to the famous spring tulip fields and the Tulalip Resort Casino. By mid-morning the temperature has already reached 23 degrees, while snow-covered Mount Rainier dominates the distant skyline. Seattle is simply a drive-through today. We’ve explored the city before, so our focus is reaching the Oregon coast. After arriving in Olympia, a friend’s recommendation convinced us to leave the freeway and follow the scenic coastal route toward Astoria. A refreshing stop at the Owl’s Nest Café gave us a chance to stretch our legs before continuing west. Along the drive, numerous Tsunami Evacuation Route signs serve as a reminder of the immense power of the Pacific Ocean. We also begin seeing markers celebrating the legendary Lewis and Clark Expedition, whose historic journey reached the Pacific Coast near Astoria in 1805 after travelling more than 6,000 kilometres across North America. Seven hours after leaving Canada, the impressive Astoria-Megler Bridge comes into view. Stretching just over 6.5 kilometres across the Columbia River, it remains the longest continuous truss bridge in North America and connects Washington State with Oregon. We soon arrive in Astoria and check into the beautifully restored Commodore Hotel, originally built in 1925. Located where the mighty Columbia River meets the Pacific Ocean, Astoria is one of America’s oldest settlements west of the Rocky Mountains. Victorian homes, steep hills and rich maritime history give the town a character unlike anywhere else. An evening stroll along the riverfront reveals why Astoria has become such a popular filming location for classics like The Goonies and Kindergarten Cop. We enjoy an unforgettable dinner from Bowpicker Fish & Chips, a former fishing boat turned takeaway restaurant, before wandering past the Columbia River Maritime Museum and Nordic Park, where Scandinavian heritage is celebrated through colourful public art and the famous hidden trolls. We finish our first day exactly how every road trip should end, with dessert, live indie folk music at the Stranded Bar & Grill, and excitement for everything that still lies ahead.
